Newcastle Great North Children’s Hospital hosts International Therakos Training
The Great North Children’s Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne is a Therakos Training Centre for low body weight extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP), one of only two in Europe. Several times a year, we welcome visitors (nurses, doctors and technicians) from around the UK and Ireland, mainland Europe and further afield for practical training on delivery of ECP to low body weight patients.
The two-day training visit consists of an overview lecture by Professor Andrew Gennery on aspects of monitoring through ECP followed by an open forum for question and discussion.
There is a nursing-based presentation discussing the practicalities, precautions and differences with low body weight patients having ECP, having the opportunity to look at our local standard operating procedures (SOP) and paperwork. This leads nicely into a practical demonstration by our expert nursing apheresis team, usually meeting one or more of our patients during the visit.
In October, we welcomed Clinicians from Valencia and Barcelona which was very positively received, opening up platforms to network and share knowledge around ECP that can be cascaded to other members of their team on their return to their local centres.
