UKPS Workshop Report

In early Juy, UKPS were delighted to host our first workshop dedicated to discussing “Extracorporeal Photopheresis for Low Body Weight Patients”. The event was held at The Pullman Hotel, London, and featured expert speakers and a Keynote lecture. The aim of the one day session was to discuss the issues and practicalities of providing ECP to low body weight patients, with a view to producing a published guideline.

Professor Andrew Gennery, Chair of UKPS and Professor and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Immunology & Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, The Great North Children’s Hospital, Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle reports on the day:

‘”Fifteen members of the UKPS nursing group met on 3rd July, to discuss issues around administering ECP to low body weight patients.

Professor Nina Worrel, Professor in Transfusion Medicine from Vienna, discussed her centres experience of administering ECP to low body weight patients, using different platforms including online, offline and ‘mini-ECP’.

This was followed by Florianne Menager, Senior Clinical Specialist with Mallinckrodt who discussed some of the practical issues associated with treating these patients.

Sisters Tracy Maher and Julie Guest then gave their perspectives on treating this group of patients with reference to the Rotherham and Great North Children’s Hospital experience, respectively.

Wide ranging discussions were had during and after each of the talks, and there is a commitment to put together a position paper on the UK Perspective of administering ECP to Low body Weight patients.

The meeting was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Mallinckrodt.”
